Bow fana

Bow fana

Place: Tahiti & Society Islands
Category: Ritual

wood, Tahiti and the Society Islands, l. 149.5 cm, d. 3.5 cm (max.), Inv. Am 3

Forster Register A.6: ‘2 bows made of white wood from Tierra del Fuego’

The bow shows the same features as Am 2. The lower-lying light-brown layers of wood are particularly recognisable where the wood in the grip region exhibits three areas of damage of different size. In addition to the Forster label (2 x 2 cm), the bow has an additional, rectangular label: ‘Forster’s register no. 6. A bow made of white wood from Tierra del Fuego.’ Like Am 2, this bow probably originated in the Society Islands (see annotation by Feest in Am 2). Gundolf Krüger
