The basket is made of the alu (Epipremnum pennatum) and has a slightly baggy rectangular opening. It is dark brown in colour and is decorated with brown strips of coconut fibre. These are tied to the basket to form three horizontal rows with a herring-bone pattern, the top row being c. 2 cm wide, and the lower ones 6-7 cm. The two upper rows and the lower row point in opposite directions. There is an additional herring-bone pattern at the bottom of the basket in a row 5 cm wide, made of the same material.
