Being a Museum Friend has lots of benefits. Here are three ways to get the most out of your membership.

1. Come along to Object Club

Each month we host a curator who showcases an object from the Museum’s collection. I can’t understate how interesting these talks are! The Museum's curators have such deep and fascinating insights into their areas of expertise. Hearing them talk has definitely been a highlight of my time at the Museum.

A recent Object Club featured a tour of our 1878 paddle steamer, PS Enterprise, with conservator Nathan Pharoah. The vessel is normally closed to the public, so it was a special occasion. I learnt about how to slip a vessel and what to do when historic parts break. These professionals are tackling the ship of Theseus question head-on.

Object Club is usually hosted twice a month — once on the last Friday (day time) and once on the following Thursday (evening). We always have a cheeky cake or a bottle of bubbly too.

2. Join the Museum Friends Car Club

We’ve recently launched the Museum Friends Car Club. It’s not just any car club — we talk about objects in the collection, why we have them and how we’re conserving them. Our members are invited along to special viewings of vehicles that aren’t currently on display, where they hear behind-the-scenes stories and learn about new acquisitions.

I don’t consider myself a ‘car person’ but now that I understand the national impact of these vehicles and their place within social history, I'm impressed by their stories and the restoration work that has gone into them.

3. Take advantage of discounts

Just flash your card at the register to receive 10 per cent off at the Museum Shop and Museum Cafe. Not to mention the long list of reciprocal benefits that we have with other institutions around the nation.

But that’s not all. We always run promotions for Friends alongside our exhibitions. From ticket offers to special opening events and tours, there’s something to fit into everyone’s diary.

Speaking of tours, don’t forget that Friends can access tours for free, including the new architecture tour which shares the story and significance of our remarkable building and site.

Why not join for yourself, or give a gift that lasts all year. It’s a great time to take advantage of the events and bonuses that come along with your membership.
