Yuji Shimizu and Tsuguo Kuzuno are elders of the Ainu of Hokkaido in northern Japan. They describe the Ainu experience of having ancestral remains stolen and their fight to have them returned. In several cases the Ainu have taken legal action to have remains returned from Japanese universities. They argue that return and reburial of ancestral remains should be allowed to follow Ainu cultural protocols.
