The National Museum of Australia is conducting an expression of interest process for the gift or transfer of deaccessioned objects to appropriate organisations. Applications close on 23 November 2026 at 11.59pm.

Appropriate organisations include state or community museums, historical societies, heritage organisations and other non-commercial entities. The Museum may at its discretion consider other applicants.

The Museum holds legal title to all objects offered under this EOI, with provenance documentation and other information available to selected recipients.

Applicants are asked to demonstrate:

  • capacity to care for and interpret objects
  • relevance between the organisation’s mission and object significance
  • proposed public access, research or community benefit
  • policies, plans and/or procedures which may support the application
  • permits or licenses to manage certain material types, where applicable

The Museum may, at its sole discretion, enter discussions with, seek further information from or exclude potential applicants.

Submissions will be carefully assessed by an expert panel of senior Museum staff specialising in curatorial and conservation.

The Museum aims to notify all organisations of the outcome by the end of 2026.
