Antarctica board game competition

General

  1. Information on how to enter and prize details form part of these Terms and Conditions. Participation in this competition (“Competition”) constitutes acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. Entries not complying with these Terms and Conditions may be deemed ineligible.

  3. The Competition commences at 9:00am (AEST) on Monday 1 June 2026 and closes at 11:59pm (AEDT) on Sunday 11 October 2026 (“Competition Period”).
  4. Entry is open to Australian primary and secondary school students. Entries must be submitted by a teacher or educator on behalf of students.
  5. Employees of the Promoter and their immediate families are ineligible to enter.
  6. Entry into the Competition is free; however, entrants are responsible for any costs associated with creating and submitting their entry.

Who Can Enter

  1. Entries must be submitted by a teacher or educator on behalf of students.
  2. Schools may submit multiple entries, including entries from individual students, small groups, or whole classes.
  3. All submitted entries must be the original work of the students.

How to Enter

  1. During the Competition Period, eligible teachers or educators must:
    • Support students to design an original Antarctica-themed board game.
    • Entries must include a set of instructions detailing ‘how to play’ the board game.
    • Photograph or scan the completed board game.
    • Email the image to education@nma.gov.au before the closing date.
    • Include the following information in the email:
      • School name
      • Year level
      • Student(s) first name
      • Teacher name
      • School postcode
      • Contact email address
      • Contact phone number
  1. Entries must be received before the closing time to be eligible.
  2. The Promoter accepts no responsibility for late, lost, incomplete or misdirected entries.

Judging

  1. This is a competition of merit. Entries will be judged based on:
    • Creativity and originality
    • Gameplay design and clarity
    • How effectively the board game reflects Australia’s current understanding of the significance of Antarctica and our responsibilities to it
  2. Entries will be judged by a panel consisting of National Museum of Australia exhibition curators and Museum educators.
  3. The Promoter’s decision in relation to any aspect of this Competition, including judging, is final and binding.

Prizes

  1. One (1) winning entry will be selected from each of the following categories:
    • Primary School Category
    • Secondary School Category
  2. The prizes are:

    Primary School Prize:

    • One (1) sled dog plush toy, estimated retail value: $29
    • One (1) copy of Alison Lester’s Sophie Scott goes South soft cover, estimated retail value: $16.99

    Secondary School Prize:

    • One (1) copy of Antarctica: A History in 100 Objects, estimated retail value: $52.99
  3. School/Classroom Prize (for each winning entry):

    • One (1) copy of the Antarctica edition of The Museum magazine, estimated retail value: $20
  4. Total prize pool value: $139
  5. Prizes are not transferable or exchangeable and cannot be redeemed for cash.
  6. If a prize becomes unavailable, the Promoter reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal value.

Winner Notification

  • Winners will be notified via email using the contact details provided on Friday 6 November 2026.
  • The names of students, winning schools and year levels may be published on the Promoter’s website and social media channels.
  • If a winner cannot be contacted within 14 days, the Promoter reserves the right to award the prize to another eligible entry.

Intellectual Property

  1. By submitting an entry, the entrant warrants that the work is original and does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party.
  2. By entering the Competition, entrants grant the Promoter a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, publish and display submitted entries for promotional and educational purposes related to:
    • The Antarctica exhibition
    • National Museum of Australia education programs
    • Promotional materials associated with the Competition
    • The Promoter’s website and social media channels

Privacy

  1. Personal information collected will be used to administer the Competition, including to identify and make contact with entrants about their entry. Personal information relating to the winning entrant(s) (such as student first name, school and school year) may be included on the Promoter’s website, on social media channels and in any promotional materials, as described in clause 26.
  2. By entering the Competition, entrants consent to the Promoter collecting, using and disclosing personal information in accordance with the National Museum of Australia Privacy Policy available at: https://www.nma.gov.au/privacy, and as permitted or required by law.

General Conditions

  1. The Promoter reserves the right to verify the validity of entries.
  2. The Promoter reserves the right to disqualify any entry that:
    • Does not comply with these Terms and Conditions
    • Contains inappropriate material
    • Is incomplete or misleading
  3. If the Competition cannot be conducted as planned due to circumstances beyond the Promoter’s control, the Promoter reserves the right to modify, suspend or cancel the Competition.
  4. The Promoter is not liable for any loss, damage or injury suffered in connection with this Competition except where liability cannot be excluded by law.
