For writers and content creators

The National Museum of Australia promotes a clear, consistent and accessible approach to all content.

This online guide is a work in progress. We hope to publish the full guide in 2020.

How to use this guide

Use the A–Z index if you have a specific query. Alternatively, use the navigation on the right to browse topics.

Start with Museum style to learn about planning your writing and inclusive language, or check out Museum terms for gallery and exhibition titles.

We’ll add sections on writing for the web, image credits, label text and more. Another excellent source is the GOV.AU Content Guide.

The Museum follows the Style Manual for Authors, Editors and Printers and spellings set out in the Macquarie Dictionary. This web-based version draws on style guides including the Monash University Editorial Style Guide. The Museum’s original guide was based on Powerhouse Museum and Melbourne Museum guides.
