27 July 2005

The Scinema Festival of Science film will be launched at the National Museum of Australia tomorrow, before screening start in 39 cities across Australia next week.

Scinema is screening from 6-21 August as part of National Science Week and in Canberra it forms part of the Australian Science Festival.

Director Cris Kennedy said Scinema gave a human side to science. 'This festival shows how science is making our quality of life better all around the world and how science is working to redress the problems that we have created with the environment.'

'This year we have seen a real push from independent film makers, first-time film makers, and young people - which is encouraging for the Australian film industry.'

WHAT: Scinema film festival launch

WHERE: Friends Lounge, National Museum of Australia

WHEN: 11.15am, Thursday, 28 July, 2005

Scinema 2005 will be launched by Canberra Times arts editor Helen Musa, and followed by a presentation by National Museum curator and filmmaker Matthew Higgins of his short film What's Happening at No 99, shot in his Ainslie backyard.

Scinema (pronounced with a long 'i' to emphasise the science behind the cinema) also features the judging screenings for the national student short film competition, with a strong presence from local filmmakers.

A number of these filmmakers will attend the launch, and will be available for interviews.

Scinema's 2005 season screens in Canberra at the National Museum of Australia daily at 1pm from Saturday, 6 August to Sunday, 14 August, and at CSIRO Discovery Centre on 13, 14, 20 and 21 August. Entry is free.
