The National Museum of Australia is inviting established scholars to apply for a prestigious new fellowship program which begins next year.
Announcing the National Museum Research Fellowships, Museum director Craddock Morton said they demonstrate the Museum's commitment to research and scholarship.
'We celebrate 25 years as a collecting institution this year, so it is appropriate that we mark this by inviting scholars to the Museum to pursue research in our fields of interest, our collections, or museology and museum practice in general.'
The principal focus of the Museum's research and scholarship are its collections and its role in creating an understanding of Australia's past. This includes practices in interpretation and conservation, as well as the experience of visitors in exhibitions and public programs.
It is expected applicants will include senior academics, post-doctoral and independent scholars, writers, artists or museum professionals with a record of achievement, publication and recognition.
The scholars in residence will work at the Museum in Canberra on either a part- or full-time basis for a period of at least three months, up to 12 months. They will undertake a significant piece of research for publication. More than one fellow may be appointed each year.
Fellows will be encouraged to participate in the Museum's programs, mentor Museum staff and present a public lecture and a seminar to Museum staff.
The Museum fellowships will cover transport, accommodation and other research expenses.
Advertisements for the inaugural 2006 fellowships will appear in newspapers beginning this weekend. The deadline for applications is 21 November.
