Land grant to
Hannibal Macarthur

Hannibal Macarthur was the nephew of John Macarthur, who persuaded him to travel to New South Wales in 1805. Hannibal was initially employed by his uncle as a merchant, but proved unsatisfactory for the work. Hannibal then assisted his aunt, Elizabeth Macarthur, in running the family properties, and was made a magistrate by Macquarie in 1814. Hannibal married Anna Maria King, daughter of the former governor.

In line with his uncle’s views, Hannibal took a strong stance against freed convicts attaining positions of authority in the colony.
