A racing life

Trainer Maurice McCarten was a former jockey. He rode to victory in more than a thousand races but missed out on a Melbourne Cup win, coming second in 1929 and third in 1933. He retired as a jockey in 1942 and began a highly successful career as a trainer.

McCarten won the Sydney trainers’ premiership (for the highest number of winning horses trained in the year) four times and was placed second 10 times. His horses won the Caulfield Cup, two Cox Plates and three Epsom Handicaps, and he trained Delta, winner of the 1951 Melbourne Cup.

Maurice McCarten won the inaugural Victorian Amateur Turf Club One Thousand Guineas in 1946 with Sweet Chime. He kept this presentation sash as a memento of the win.   Zoom
