Quantum physicist and science ‘evangelist’ Professor Michelle Yvonne Simmons reflects on her time as Australian of the Year. One of the world’s top scientists, Michelle received the award for her contributions to quantum computing.
At the forefront of what she calls the ‘space race of the computing era’, Michelle’s aim is to build a quantum computer able to solve problems in minutes that would otherwise take thousands of years.
Such a discovery has the potential to revolutionise drug design, weather forecasting, artificial intelligence and more. An advocate for Australian scientific research and a role model to young scientists everywhere, Michelle encourages all students to dream big, challenge themselves and achieve ambitious goals in science.
