About your guide

Catherine Fysh has just arrived in Canberra in 1947 to take up a position as a biochemist at the Institute of Anatomy after graduating from university. She leaves her family in country Queensland and arrives to find a new suburb named after her great-grandfather. Being allocated accommodation at Acton Guest House, she soon enters into the lifestyle of this developing capital and makes some lifelong friends.

Share some of Catherine’s experiences and passions as she establishes herself as one of many young professionals who have come to Canberra to be part of the city's postwar growth.

Hear about her work at the Institute, her life at Acton Guest House (now the Heritage Child Care Centre at the Australian National University), her social activities and developing relationships.

Tour information

This is an outdoor walking tour so we recommend you wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared for unpredictable weather. We recommend you bring a bottle of water, and an umbrella/raincoat or hat/sunscreen – whichever is applicable on the day.

The tour may be cancelled in the event of severe weather, and refunds or transfers will be arranged.

Our tours are conducted at an easy pace, however you should consider whether you are fit to walk and stand for a full hour. We may encounter small hills and some uneven ground and pathways. If you have any concerns about your ability to undertake our tour, please discuss them at the time of your booking or inform the guide prior to departure.

If you have any special needs, please advise us at the time of booking.
