Known to most Australians as ‘Oppy’, Hubert Opperman (1904–1996) was one of the greatest cyclists of his time. In this talk, senior curator Daniel Oakman will reflect on why Opperman became a national hero and how his spectacular cycling feats transformed popular understandings of human endurance and the Australian continent itself.
