Opened in Canberra in March 2001, the National Museum is the first in the country devoted to telling the stories of Australia and Australians, exploring the key issues, events and people that have shaped and influenced the nation.

State-of-the-art technology and exhibition design present the stories of Australia in an exciting and inventive manner, including the use of multi-media, live performances and hands-on activities, to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

Inspired by the idea of a jigsaw puzzle, the building expresses the many tangled stories that make up Australia's history. The design achieved international recognition in late 2001, winning in London the prestigious Blueprint Architecture Award for the world's Best New Public Building of the Year.

Inside the National Museum, visitors can see the skin of the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, some of Australia's largest collection of Aboriginal bark paintings, convict clothing and material from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

The Museum includes a high-quality restaurant, which features spectacular views of Lake Burley Griffin and has become a significant destination in its own right. One of two cafes spills out onto the Garden of Australian Dreams, a remarkable garden and cultural arena. The other café is located in the Museum's spectacular entrance Hall. The Museum shop offers a comprehensive collection of Australian books, museum-quality arts and crafts, music and children's items.

The National Museum of Australia, located on Lawson Crescent, Acton Peninsula, Canberra, Australia is open 9am-5pm daily, except Christmas Day. Entry to the permanent exhibitions is free, some special programs and activities have an admission charge.
