Student Prize

Student Prize for the History of Australian Science 2009

Submissions are being invited for the National Museum of Australia Student Prize for the History of Australian Science 2009.

The National Museum of Australia and the Australian Academy of Science's National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science jointly award an annual prize for the best student essay in the History of Australian Science or Australian Environmental History.

The prizes are awarded in alternate years in May, with the history of science prize being offered in even-numbered years and the environmental history prize in odd-numbered years.

The prize is a certificate and $2500.

The closing date for submissions is 27 February 2009.

Eligibility

The prize will be awarded for original unpublished research undertaken while enrolled as a student (postgraduate or undergraduate) at any tertiary educational institution.

The research should be presented as an essay 5,000-8,000 words in length (exclusive of endnotes).

Essays must be written in English and fully documented following the style specified for the Australian Academy of Science's journal, Historical Records of Australian Science.

Essays may deal with any aspect Australian environmental history (including comparisons between Australia and other places). Environmental history includes the social and cultural histories of environments, the histories of scientific studies of the environment, the histories of the relations between people and environments and changes in environmental ideas over time.

Selection process

The judging panel will have three members:

  • Chair (or nominee), National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science (Chair of panel)
  • Editor (or nominee), Historical Records of Australian Science
  • Director of Centre for Historical Research (or nominee), National Museum of Australia.

How to apply

Attach a cover sheet to your essay indicating:

  • Your full name
  • Your contact details (postal and e-mail addresses and telephone number)
  • The title of your submission
  • The university course you are studying (and year of course if undergraduate)
  • Your student number.

Your essay must be accompanied by a letter from your academic supervisor attesting that the essay meets the eligibility criterion set out above.

Entries will not be returned. Judges' decisions are final.

The winner will be contacted by mail and/or e-mail, and will be announced on the websites of the National Museum of Australia and the Australian Academy of Science in June 2009.
