Counterpoint: Indigenous and Western knowledge of plants in Northern Australia

Lynne McCarthy
Lynne McCarthy

Environmental historian Dr Lynne McCarthy is spending her time as a Research Fellow exploring the cultural, historical and scientific dimensions of Indigenous and Western knowledge of plant ecologies in Northern Australia.

The Counterpoint project will situate historical and scientific recordings of botany and ecology from the 1948 American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land, with contemporary recordings of Indigenous knowledge of plants.

The study will also look more specifically at the work and life of expedition botanist Raymond Specht and his contribution to the history of the science of plant ecology in Australia.

Lynne's field-based research will involve collaboration with Indigenous communities to revisit sites where botanical specimens were recorded and collected by Specht, documenting plant communities and traditional knowledge and uses.
