The Centre for Historical Research was established in 2007 to bring the nation's best historians and scholars to the National Museum.

The Centre is led by military and social historian Dr Peter Stanley.

Senior Research Fellows include leading desert archaeologist Dr Mike Smith and Margo Neale, whose highly regarded work in Indigenous history and art will continue at the Centre.

The Centre is also strengthening links with the Australian National University, through the appointment of Senior Research Fellows Dr Libby Robin, an environmental historian, and Dr Nicholas Brown from the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
