About 60 participants from across Australia and the Pacific gathered at the National Museum in November 2007 to take part in the Australian and Pacific museums workshops.
Representatives of 15 museums from 12 Pacific nations and Timor Leste, along with other industry professionals and academics were in attendance.
The first workshop, Pacific Partnerships, was devoted largely to considering existing and possible relationships between museums.
The second workshop, Pacific Cultural Heritage, looked at aspects of the description and interpretation of Pacific cultures.
The meeting demonstrated the goodwill existing between museums in the region, in which several strong partnerships had already been formed.
It suggested that Australian museums were prepared to take a leading role in supporting kindred institutions in the region, an endeavour in which the National Museum of Australia is taking a leading role.
This venture, which arose from Dr Susan Cochrane's Visiting Fellowship project, shows the leverage that can be obtained from National Museum Visiting Fellowships.
