Dr Susan Cochrane

NATIONAL MUSEUM VISTING FELLOW 2007

Dr Susan Cochrane is a curator and researcher who, for more than two decades, has studied the representation of Pacific cultures in museums, Pacific and Aboriginal art and art history.

As a National Museum of Australia Research Fellow, Susan worked to engage Australian and Pacific museums in projects that fostered mutually beneficial cultural development for museums and communities.

As part of her Fellowship, Susan developed two successful Pacific museums workshops in November 2007.

An independent curator and consultant for Australian museums and art galleries and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in New Caledonia, Susan has made an important contribution to the literature on Pacific art as an author and editor of books, catalogue essays and articles.

The emerging field of research on Pacific collections in the custodianship of Australian institutions is significant at a time when Australia's increasingly close engagement with Melanesian nations creates the need for a better understanding of this complex region.

Susan is also a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Queensland's School of English, Media Studies and Art History.
