The Museum

The National Museum of Australia opened in early 2001 as the Commonwealth flagship for the Centenary of Federation celebrations and has broken new ground by combining the best contemporary exhibition techniques with new media technologies.

Responsibilities of the section

The Employee Relations and People Development (ER&PD) Section has responsibility for human resource management (HRM) and workplace relations programs. The Section prepares and implements policies, practices and procedures appropriate to the Museum's operational requirements and which contribute to the ongoing development and continuous improvement of management practices. The Section provides strategic and operational advice and support to Museum staff and management across a range of HRM and workplace relations issues.

The Human Resources team within ER&PD has up to 6 staff and is responsible for a range of HR practices and processes including: staffing practices and recruitment; payroll administration; employee consultation, dispute resolution, interpretation of and advising on workplace agreements, managing under-performance, APS Values and Code of Conduct matters, corporate training, personal and leadership development; compensation and rehabilitation; workplace diversity; induction and separation.

ER&PD works to develop a positive work environment for the Museum where:

Responsibilities of the position

As Recruitment Officer you will be responsible for carrying out functions for the Museum as outlined below:

  • advising Museum managers and staff on, and managing all aspects of, recruitment processes and practices (including SES recruitment, Museum's Career Development Register and temporary employment register);
  • processing all recruitment requests and providing and arranging as appropriate the administrative support for Museum recruitment processes;
  • handling the operational aspects of the Museum work experience program and liaising with external clients and Museum managers on placements;
  • understanding and promoting to managers and staff, as an integral part of your work, the Museum's Work Level Standards and Capability Profile; and
  • supervising other staff from time to time.

Your other responsibilities will include regular internal reporting and you will be confident and concise in your presentation style and be able to handle complex client service issues effectively.

You will be required to ensure that you have sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake your work.

ER&PD has implemented the first phase of web-recruitment through its human resource information system (Aurion) which enables applications to be received on-line for people applying for job vacancies.

Remuneration

Annual salary of between $50,249 and $53,716 (*Note: negotiations for the Museum's replacement Workplace Agreement are nearing completion. Once approved, the new Agreement includes an additional pay rise of 4.25% on top of the above rates.) plus superannuation. Employment conditions are covered by the National Museum of Australia Workplace Agreement 2005 to 2008.

Selection criteria

All criteria are weighted equally.

  1. Demonstrated capacity to analyse, interpret and apply relevant APS legislation relating to personnel practices and procedures, particularly as they relate to APS Recruitment.
  2. Sound oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to customer service excellence.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a small, diverse and busy office team environment with minimal supervision.
  4. Ability to organise work flow to ensure timely processing and to effectively handle changing priorities.
  5. Sound analytical and numerical skills.
