The Museum

The National Museum of Australia opened in early 2001 as the Commonwealth flagship for the Centenary of Federation celebrations and has broken new ground by combining the best contemporary exhibition techniques with new media technologies.

It has become a landmark among Australian museums in the quality and high standard of its exhibitions, public programs and the integrated use of technologies. The Museum has won many awards for its architecture, building and services.

The Museum presents Australian objects and stories based on the major themes of Land, Nation and People. These themes are inclusive of the many different cultures and experiences that have shaped our nation.

Responsibilities of the section

The Print and Digital Publishing section is responsible for the planning, production and distribution of a range of content-based products and services including websites, multimedia and print publications.

The Web & Multimedia team develops and publishes content for the Museum's website and intranet, in concert with Museum stakeholders and external suppliers. The site is published using a bespoke content management system (CMS). The team also develops and produces multimedia products for use both in the Museum's galleries and on the website.

Major outputs to be achieved include:

  • rich content for exhibitions, including on-line exhibitions
  • interactive content on Web 2.0 sites such as Flickr and Facebook
  • e-commerce
  • collection highlights and other collection-related content
  • enhancements in the areas of online learning, community interaction, children's content, and museological practice
  • implementation of distributed authoring for stakeholders throughout the Museum
  • evaluation and review of the website's content and functionality

Responsibilities of the position

The Content Coordination and Production Officer's role will be to coordinate, produce and publish content for the Museum's website. This includes a key role in ensuring that day-to-day publishing activities proceed successfully and efficiently in accordance with the Museum's website publishing business plans, processes and standards.

This will involve the following tasks, performed in consultation with key stakeholders and under the general direction of the Content Coordinator, Website Publishing:

  • liaise with content providers and technical staff to coordinate the delivery and publication of quality website content using the Museum's content management systems
  • produce and publish web content to the Museum's website and maintain its accuracy and currency
  • help scope new templates and undertake usability testing as required
  • provide basic technical and production advice to website team and authors
  • help authors maximise the visual standards and presentation of their content
  • help manage workflows, priorities and approvals processes
  • ensure that he/she has sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake his/her work safely and that employees are provided with sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to enable them to perform their duties safely.

Remuneration

Annual salary of between $55,179 and $58,511 plus superannuation. Employment conditions are covered by the National Museum of Australia Workplace Agreement 2005 to 2008.

Selection criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience in website publishing, including production requirements for the use of text, images, audio and video content, and adaptation of content developed for printed media into web content. Proven technical knowledge and skills in content management systems, HTML, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
  2. Demonstrated ability to initiate and coordinate inputs from a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Ability to assess priorities and respond appropriately to conflicting deadlines.
  4. Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills.
  5. Practical knowledge of website accessibility and usability standards, the ability to advise on visual presentation within a system's capabilities.
  6. Sound understanding or ability to learn the legal aspects of website publishing, including copyright, moral rights, defamation and privacy issues.
