Jadine Temby

This young mother has a beautiful daughter called Clare, and lives in Wentworth. Jade has lived her whole life around the Wentworth district. She is a practising artist and currently works part-time at the Department of Primary Industries, as well as running a home-based Herbal Life business.

Wentworth is a town full of cultural heritage; the community spirit is very strong. Because of the two mighty rivers, it attracts tourism. This building will soon become a gourmet restaurant, wine tasting centre and retail food store in mid-2004. The building served as a navigation company from 1882 onwards, when the rivers were the highways, and has since been service station, butchery etc. After being empty for a few years it will now soon come to life with local food and wines. Wentworth was built at the confluence of the Murray-Darling Rivers because of the convenience of having access to both rivers and the traffic they brought.

Issue: the removal of trees even kilometres from a water course can have an effect on the salinity levels and the height of the water table surrounding the water course. Run-off from the cleared land of chemicals and fertilisers into our waterways continues to be a problem. This photo was taken near the Anabranch. As you can see, the Anabranch is like an oasis in the desert when you compare this photo to the ones of the Anabranch. Trees keep the water table lower by using water and transpiring it to the atmosphere as part of the hydrological cycle. Without trees the water table rises and in some areas reaches the surface which can be seen as a salt flat.

Dry creek bed shows an old wooden fence built into the water to separate paddocks. If the pipeline is built, many trees will have to be cleared to make way for new fences and the pipeline itself.

A lot of people around the Wentworth area do not want the Anabranch to be pipelined.

This photo was taken near the crossing at Tara Downs Station NSW. Now the Anabranch is dry the salt sits on the surface. The freshwater lens that once sat under and around the Anabranch is becoming smaller thus making the surface water saltier.
