Foundry: Pouring steel

Coal-fired furnaces in the foundry were heated to the extremely high temperatures — over 1500°C — needed to melt steel. Molten steel was then poured by hand into prepared sand moulds. Once the steel had hardened, workers split open the moulds to remove the castings.
