Established seed orchard

Seed orchard on Wyndgate
Eventually there will be four seed orchards on Hindmarsh Island. A variety of understory plants are grown and harvested, the seed to be used in broad scale direct seeding on previously cropped or grazed farming land. This seed orchard, constructed of weed mat, is growing seven species of plants.

Volunteers planting trees

Revegetation work on a degraded saltpan. Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), Hindmarsh Island Landcare Group (HILG), South Coast Environment Group (SCEG), visitors and children. On World Environment Day 2005 the restoration of this degraded saltpan commenced.

A mixture of people were involved in the planting of swamp paperbark, CVA, HILG, SCEG, visitors and children. HILG likes to involve lots of different people and groups in these activities.

Shifting sands across time, Grant (Goolwa)

42 mile crossing

The great Southern Ocean blows a mighty wind with the sands being swept further and further inland filling in the Coorong. Replanting programs are required because there has been too much clearing of the land. Salinity is slowly beating us.

Two generations

Uncle Neville Gollan (Elder) Ngarrindjeri man with the next generation of leaders, his great nephew Hank Trevorrow. 'The land and waters is a living body. We the Ngarrindjeri people are a part of its existence. The land and waters must be healthy. We are hurting for our country. The land is dying, the river is dying, the Kurank (Coorong) is dying and the Murray Mouth is closing. What does the future hold for us?' (Tom Trevorrow, Ngarrindjeri Heritage committee 2002)

The Ngarrindjeri people would collect the sought after fruit (small apples) they would also bake them in cakes and preserve them for the winter months.
