Hindmarsh Island Landcare group nursery

The Hindmarsh Island Landcare Group (HILG) collects seed from remnant indigenous vegetation on the island, propagates using this seed, then raises and plants out in appropriate places on the island. The group has its own nursery, which is part of Ferrymans Reserve, an Alexandrina Council reserve. An arboretum is being established here. It also uses the Alexandrina Council Community Nursery on the mainland, which being on mains water is used to irrigate island plants that are salt sensitive.

Two generations

Uncle Neville Gollan (Elder) Ngarrindjeri man with the next generation of leaders, his great nephew Hank Trevorrow. 'The land and waters is a living body. We the Ngarrindjeri people are a part of its existence. The land and waters must be healthy. We are hurting for our country. The land is dying, the river is dying, the Kurank (Coorong) is dying and the Murray Mouth is closing. What does the future hold for us?' (Tom Trevorrow, Ngarrindjeri Heritage committee 2002)

Tanned seal skin

This seal was actually caught in the Goolwa channel in 1901 by the Lush family. The seal was caught in a net and would have been in the Coorong chasing a feed. Seal was a traditional food.

Fish scoop

The Ngarrindjeri used woven baskets like this to scoop fish out of fish traps and nets, as well as to catch small fish in the shallows. This is still a traditional practice by Ngarrindjeri peoples of their weaving skills, using fresh water sedges.

Young children at lunch at 42 mile crossing. Children being educated from a field trip from Camp Coorong. they are being taught land and country (biodiversity, conservation) from a Ngarrindjeri perspective.
