Tanned seal skin

This seal was caught in the Goolwa channel in 1901 by the Lush family. The seal was caught in a net, and would have been in the Coorong chasing a feed. Seal was a traditional food.

Fish scoop

The Ngarrindjeri used woven baskets like this to scoop fish out of fish traps and nets, as well as to catch small fish in the shallows. This is still a traditional practice by Ngarrindjeri peoples of their weaving skills, using fresh water sedges.

Salt Creek is freshwater. This water is so important to the Kurangk (Coorong) - we need this for the birds and fish. Salt Creek flows are scarce and the re-diversion of south east channels has had a major impact on the washpool catchments. As always the problem seems man-made.

This is what western farming has done. Where has all the freshwater gone? Water flows at Salt Creek have nearly come to a standstill. This is having dire impacts on the ecosystem in this region. What will happen? We need change.

Southern end of Coorong

The southern end of the Kurangk (Coorong). The water here now is saline - up to six times higher in salt content than the Southern Ocean!

Kids having lunch

Having lunch at 42 Mile Crossing, these children are on a field trip from Camp Coorong. They are being taught land and country (biodiversity, conservation) from a Ngarrindjeri perspective.
