Our group has been monitoring local waterways through the local Waterwatch program for several years. We undertake regular monitoring at this site to ensure that the creek water is healthy for us to swim and fish in and also that it's healthy before flowing into the River Murray.

Water quality:

Turbidity: 20
pH: 7.0
Salinity: 320EC units

We notice that the reeds have been cleared away from the boat ramp since our last sampling.

ACT Waterwatch says:

The turbidity is slightly higher than it should be. Clearing of channel plants may have disturbed the bottom of the waterway and caused this.

About the site

This site is our regular Waterwatch monitoring site. The Ral Ral creek flows past our school at the end of Warrego St at Renmark North. The creek then flows back into the River Murray at Renmark.

What's going on:

The site is the location of the Warrego Street boat ramp so the area is mostly used for recreation. Some block owners pump water from the creek to irrigate as well. There is lots of native vegetation surrounding the site including lots of reeds (phragmites and typha) which sometimes block up the boat ramp if there is no flow. This makes it hard for us to get a water sample.

As above – we monitor the water quality at the site each school term as part of the Waterwatch program.
