Due to good rainfall in the catchment during 2009 the Finniss has contributed a considerable quantity of water to the Goolwa Pool that has been created by the recent construction of a weir across the Lower Murray at Clayton Bay SA. This Goolwa pool has been created to the detriment of Lake Alexandrina.

About the site

Down-stream side of the Winery Road Ford over the Finniss River S.A.

The water at this site is a mixture of Finniss River water and water from other sources and is part of the Goolwa Pool of water created by the construction of a weir at Clayton Bay.

The Finniss River is a tributary of the Lower Murray and its catchment is in the Eastern Mt Lofty Ranges. A current moratorium is in place (supposedly) to prevent further extractions from the River, pending the Eastern Mt Lofty Ranges Water Allocation Plan. This moratorium has been in place for in excess of 6 years. Flows from the River have been reducing for years due to over extraction. The Finniss River is a major contributor of water to Lake Alexandrina.

On going monitoring is being done by another Group with which our group is associated.
