Welcome to the Research Library of the National Museum of Australia.

The purpose of the Museum's Research Library is to assist with the work and research of all Museum staff.  It is open to the public, however some services are only for Museum staff.  See below for opening hours and how to contact Research Library staff.

The Research Library collects material to support the three interrelated themes outlined in the National Museum of Australia Act 1980 (the Museum Act), they are:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture
  • Australia's history and society since 1788
  • the interaction of people with the environment

Particular areas of subject focus include anthropology, archaeology, Australian Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, the Australian environment, local histories, and biographies.  In addition to these main themes the Research Library collects material covering museum studies and conservation, as well as items relating to the corporate memory of the Museum.
