Rome: City and Empire brings to Canberra more than 200 of the British Museum’s most engaging and beautiful Roman objects. They tell the story of how Rome grew from a series of small villages to become a mighty empire.

School programs

The National Museum is offering Rome: City and Empire school programs aligned with the Australian Curriculum.

Students can explore how the Empire was won and held, witness the grandeur of Rome, and understand and celebrate the rich diversity of her peoples.

Museum-guided programs, as well as teacher-guided and after hours tours, are available (costs apply). Bookings are essential.

Teacher-guided: 15 October to 21 December 2018, Monday to Friday, 9am, 10am, 12pm and 2pm

  • Teachers lead students through a one-hour self-guided tour
  • Curriculum: History, Years 5 to 12 and general introduction
  • Cost: $10 per student

Museum-guided: 23 October to 14 December 2018, Tuesday to Friday, 10am and 12.30pm

  • Students find and analyse source material with use of ICT, in a two-hour program with a Museum educator
  • Curriculum: History, Year 7, ACDSEH038, ACDSEH039, ACDSEH040 and Ancient History, Year 12, ACHAH204, ACHAH215
  • Cost: $12 per student

Museum-guided (after hours): 23 October to 13 December 2018, Tuesday to Thursday, 5–6pm

  • A one-hour tour of key objects and themes with a Museum educator
  • Curriculum: History, Years 5 to 12 and general introduction
  • Cost: $15 per student
