There are very special stories that have been told for thousands of years by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They include how the kangaroo got her pouch, and a story about a bogong moth named Myee.

In Aboriginal Australia, students are introduced to the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and life before 1788. Students handle objects, explore the galleries and participate in storytelling to explore the importance of sharing knowledge.

Aims

  • Introduce students to the concept of storytelling as knowledge-sharing.
  • Enable students to examine and understand the purpose and uses of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tools before European settlement through to today.
  • Assist students to explore the pre-contact lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples prior to European settlement through the Museum’s galleries.

Structure

  • Introductory activity — students handle and discuss a range of objects that relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander life before 1788 and today. Students are introduced to the concept of the Dreaming through an interactive storytelling session.
  • Gallery activity — students explore the First Australians gallery to make further discoveries about the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and society.
  • Reflection — students gather to discuss the artefacts they have found and the importance of these to the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples lived.
