Into the Simpson Desert: audio blog

Search for signs of a lost world

Join veteran desert archaeologist Dr Mike Smith on an expedition into the remote southern Simpson Desert on the search for signs of a lost world. Today, the seemingly barren dune plains in the area stretch as far as the eye can see. For thousands of years this landscape has been home to Aboriginal people and, before them, giant animals or mega fauna.

Mike took part in a camel trek to visit the Kallakoopah region, near Lake Eyre in South Australia, from 26 June to 18 July 2007. Mike delivered regular reports  from the field via satellite phone. He recounted the thrill of discovering ancient fossil remains, a helicopter rescue for an injured expeditioner and other trials and triumphs in the desert.
