September 2014

Spirited: a behind-the-scenes event

Wednesday, 3 September 9am to 11am

Book early to secure your spot for an exclusive peek at the new exhibition Spirited: Australia’s Horse Story, before it opens to the public. Friends will hear curators talk about the making of the exhibition. Enjoy a personalised curator-led walk through the gallery, then relax in our Friends Lounge to enjoy a very spirited morning tea. Numbers are strictly limited to 30 so please book early!

Spring racing charity lunch

Friday, 5 September, 11.30am

Women in Racing Canberra present their annual Spring racing charity lunch and have kindly included Museum Friends on the invitation list. Enjoy a three-course sit-down lunch with bubbles, join the live auction and raffle, with music provided by local musicians. National Museum head curator Dr Kirsten Wehner is the guest speaker. All funds raised will go to Bosom Buddies ACT.

Special offer from Friends of the Memorial - Travelled these roads coach tour

Saturday, 13 September 8.30am to 5.30pm

During the First World War, many Canberrans and local towns supported Australia’s wartime effort. As part of the centenary, the Friends program is hosting a tour of military history sites in the Canberra region. Follow in the footsteps of the men from Snowy River March, from their home towns to the training camp at Goulburn, to the cemeteries where they were buried. The coach tour will also include a visit to the convict bridge at Towrang. The tour will begin and end at the Australian War Memorial.

Cost: A special rate for Museum Friends of $50 per person.

Landmark women

Alex Sloan has been a journalist and broadcaster with the ABC for 25 years. She has worked for ABC Rural, Radio National and most recently, 666 ABC Canberra. Alex is known for her warm and engaging interview style and has won respect for firm but fair questioning across the Drive, Weekends, Mornings and now Afternoons programs at 666.

Landmark women: Dr Sue Packer

Friday 17 October 2014, 10am to 12pm

Landmark women features prominent Canberra women talking about their lives, work and passions. Our October guest is Dr Sue Packer AM. Sue is a paediatrician and heads the Child at Risk Assessment Unit at Canberra Hospital, who is dedicated to improving the lives of children who have been abused or neglected. Sue was Canberra Citizen of the Year in 2013 and is also chairwoman of the Mr Fluffy Community and Expert Reference Group.

Head of Conservation Vicki Humphrey will conduct this special tour of the Mitchell repository. It is a great opportunity to see the Museum's behind-the-scenes work on collection and display objects.
