Adze to’i

Adze to’i

Place: Tahiti & Society Islands
Category: Tools

wood, basalt, coconut fibre, Tahiti and the Society Islands, l. 43 cm (overall), l. 14 cm, w. 5 cm (blade), Inv. Hanover 1854, No. 3

Forster Register A.12: ‘two large stone axes from Otaheiti’ (cf. Oz 360)

Compared to the objects Oz 360 and Oz 361, this adze is smaller, and although it corresponds to the other two adzes with regard to material, it does not feature the so-called ‘T-shaft’. The reason for the missing ‘T-shaft’ might be that the end is broken off. It can at least be clearly seen that the shaft is splintered or has been eaten away by wood ticks (note on the file card).
