Paddy Tjangala

Chisel 1972, Paddy Tjangala

Despite discouragement from European artefact buyers, who demanded what they considered to be 'authentic' work, Western Desert craftsmen ingeniously combined labour-saving European resources such as metal blades and copper wire with traditional materials such as spinifex grass resin and kangaroo sinew. This chisel was acquired from the artist, a renowned maker of wooden artefacts who was also one of the founding members of Papunya Tula Artists.
