Olive Pink

Olive Pink (1884–1975) was one of the few women working in the male-dominated field of anthropology in the 1930s and 1940s. She collected these shields during a period spent living with Aboriginal people in the desert. The shields' paintwork closely resembles the canvases in this exhibition, including the dotted backgrounds that became the hallmark of the early Papunya style.
