Nation gallery closure

Nation gallery closed on 1 February 2010 to make way for an exciting new permanent gallery — Landmarks: People and Places across Australia.

The new gallery is set to open in 2011 and will explore fascinating stories of how people have responded to the opportunities and challenges of living in Australia.

During the redevelopment period, all objects from the Nation gallery will be deinstalled and removed from display. These objects include:

  • Phar Lap's heart
  • the FJ Holden car
  • the Hills hoist
  • the Victa lawnmover
  • the Bean 14 motor vehicle
  • the pink Propert caravan.

Selected objects from the Nation gallery collection will be coming back on display in 2011 as part of the new Landmarks gallery. These objects include:

The FJ Holden car will be replaced by one of three American made prototypes for the Holden car.

The closure of Nation gallery is part of the Museum Development program.
