The Courtney Goodwill Trophy was donated by New Zealand wool and sheep exporter Roy Courtney, for competition in international rugby league. It stands 1.76 metres high and has a 1.37 metre square base.
Surmounted by a winged woman on a silver globe, the lavish trophy depicts pioneering players including James Lomas (England), Jean Galla (France), Albert Baskerville (New Zealand) and Dally Messenger (Australia). The Goodwill Trophy was at stake whenever the current holders did battle with one of the other three countries.
Australia's dominance of the game and the difficulty of transporting this large trophy - meant it faded from public view in the 1960s.
