100 years of the game

 

Rugby league in Australia started as a rebel football competition established in defiance of the New South Wales Rugby Union. With its mix of hardness and athleticism, it has grown to become one of the most popular of Australian sports, a skilful fast-moving game that has the passionate support of its fans.

1940s: Wests Leagues Club

The first Western Suburbs League Club at Ashfield. Leagues clubs were initially modest establishments but with the influx of poker machine revenue, later grew to be major venues. Licensed clubs now play an enormous role in rugby league. They continue to support the game at all levels and the wider community through many charities.
