100 years of the game

 

Rugby league in Australia started as a rebel football competition established in defiance of the New South Wales Rugby Union. With its mix of hardness and athleticism, it has grown to become one of the most popular of Australian sports, a skilful fast-moving game that has the passionate support of its fans.

1924: The pride of Queensland

Some rate the 1924 Queensland team as the finest to ever wear the maroon jersey in the state's long and proud history. The star-studded team, including many from the champion Toowoomba side, won all three matches against New South Wales and also defeated the touring Great Britain side.
