100 years of the game

 

Rugby league in Australia started as a rebel football competition established in defiance of the New South Wales Rugby Union. With its mix of hardness and athleticism, it has grown to become one of the most popular of Australian sports, a skilful fast-moving game that has the passionate support of its fans.

2005: Marshall's flick pass

The defining image of the 2005 grand final, this picture captures the moment when Wests Tigers player Benji Marshall pierced the North Queensland Cowboys' defence, drawing opposition fullback Matt Bowen. Marshall then sent Pat Richards away to score with a sublime flick pass. Wests won the match 30-16.
