100 years of the game

 

Rugby league in Australia started as a rebel football competition established in defiance of the New South Wales Rugby Union. With its mix of hardness and athleticism, it has grown to become one of the most popular of Australian sports, a skilful fast-moving game that has the passionate support of its fans.

2000: Save our Souths

Following South Sydney's expulsion from the National Rugby League competition in 1999, more than 50,000 fans marched through the streets of Sydney calling for the Rabbitohs to be reinstated. After extended legal proceedings, the club was re-admitted to the competition in 2002.
