A major exhibition of the work of Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye has been developed by the National Museum of Australia for display in Japan in partnership with Japan's largest newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, National Museum of Art, Osaka and The National Art Centre, Tokyo.

The exhibition tells the story of an extraordinary Australian who is one of the world's major artists of the twentieth century. The exhibition covers her connection to Country through images that are also received in the western art world as works of art rivalling the great European and American masters.

After a highly acclaimed season at the National Museum of Art in Osaka the exhibition, Utopia: The Genius of Emily Kame Kngwarreye, opened at the National Art Centre in Tokyo on 28 May 2008.

Utopia: The Genius of Emily Kame Kngwarreye is the largest collection of works by a single Australian artist to tour overseas. It includes 120 works by Emily Kame Kngwarreye from more than 60 national and overseas collections and is valued at more than 30 million dollars.

National Art Centre, Tokyo, 28 May – 28 July 2008

Australia

National Museum of Australia, opens in Canberra 22 August 2008
Admission charges apply:
$10 per adult
$4 per child (children aged 5 to 16 years)
