Lake Victoria is a culturally significant place both for its Aboriginal heritage and European heritage. Lake Victoria is about 50 km from Wentworth, downstream on the Murray River, and is an important water storage facility, particularly for South Australia. If a lot of salty water comes down the Murray and Darling Rivers, it is diverted into Lake Victoria to be diluted with less saline water, for use further down the Murray.

On 27 August 1841, hundreds of Aboriginal people were massacred at Rufus River. They are buried around Lake Victoria. There are many other Aboriginal graves around the lake, some dating as far back as 18,000 years ago. Also in the lake are the bodies of two airmen who lost their lives during bombing and gunnery practice at Lake Victoria. Their bodies remain at rest in their aircraft beneath the lake. I grew up near Lake Victoria and used to camp with my family under the River Red Gums surrounding the lake.
