Murray and Darling Cod

The cod had been waiting in a few deep pools while the rest of the river was dry. When the new water met them they were exposed to higher salinity and temperature levels. This was too much of a shock and they died. In April 2004 some Murray cod fingerlings were released from the Murray Darling Junction, as a positive measure to try to rectify the deaths. 25,000 cod will be released this year.
