For many years, the oval at Charles Sturt University South Campus was a popular Wagga Wagga sporting venue. Today the lower sections are badly affected by salinisation. In dry weather, salt crystals are visible on the ground surface. In the mid 1990s Wagga Wagga City Council installed several piezometers within the South Campus to measure groundwater and salinity levels. The piezometer bores extended about 8 metres below ground. PVC piping extended above ground about 50cm. The Council made cylindrical metal casings to protect the protruding PVC pipes from vandals. Metal plaques attached to the casings identified the piezometers as urban salinity monitoring bores.
