Native plant seed bank

 

In the Birrego district, west of Wagga Wagga, farmers and native plant enthusiasts, Rosie Smith and Graham Strong, harvest native seed from roadsides and state forests and from revegetation plantings on the Strong family farms, Arcadia and Oakvale. Harvested seed is sold to Landcare groups and farmers who propagate and plant local species to counter ecological problems like salinity.

Many of the native plant seeds harvested by Rosie and Graham are also edible. Flour ground from roasted kurrajong seeds is particularly tasty. Rosie and Graham are using native plants to develop new farm enterprises. As well as supplying tree, shrub and grass seeds for propagation and revegetation projects, Rosie and Graham are planning to harvest and sell edible native seeds and fruits into the expanding bush food market.
