Derby WA

An endless vastness

Like many towns in north Western Australia, Derby is surrounded by a seemingly endless vastness. It is 2354 km north of Perth and 236 km from the resort town of Broome on the tidal mudflats of King Sound. The waters can be treacherous with rips and gigantic tides, the highest tides anywhere in Australia.

The boab tree is an iconic feature of Derby. The famous boab prison tree is located 7 km from the town.

Derby was yet another place where we learnt a little bit of local language from a number of students and we were able to incorporate this into the two songs. It's great to see the connections students have to their culture. From the lyrics it's clear how important friends, family and community are to these kids and in small towns this becomes even more obvious.
