The Goulburn River is home to 19 species of native fish and ten species of introduced fish. Native fish vary in size from metre-long Murray cod to 8-centimetre Australian smelt, but few are now found in the numbers they used to be.
No-one knows exactly when the first European fish were introduced to the Goulburn River - probably some time in the mid-nineteenth century. Now they thrive in the river, varying in size from monster 20-kilogram carp to the tiny mosquito fish. Some are popular with anglers - trout especially, but also redfin and roach. But some people would like to see most or all introduced fish eliminated from Australian waters.
